It is a spa town in a wonderful, fairy-like location. Individual parts of the town are in charming picturesque valleys surrounded by forested hills belonging to the Walbrzych Mountains and the Owl Mountains.
CLIMATE The climate of Jedlina Zdroj is mountainous and moderately stimulus, modified by forests adjacent to the spa. HISTORICAL VIEW
The first mention of the town comes from the 13th century. In fact, it relates to the currently south-eastern part of the town – Jedlinka, which at that time was a settlement of woodcutters and was within the borders of the property belonging to Bolek the First the Prince of Swidnica and Jawor. It is from the former German name Jedlinki (Tannhausen), which was associated with the fir forests growing all around the town, that the current name of the town comes from. Mineral springs were discovered in Jedlina Zdroj in the 16th century, however, they began to be used on a larger scale in 1697. It was then that they were considered medicinal. At that time the owner of the pastures on which the healing spa gushed was Caspar Schäl – a peasant from Jedlinka. Due to the increasing number of the sick arriving from the surrounding villages, Schäl made the first investments: he made an intake for the healing water in a hollow tree trunk and erected a food stall next to it.
Later on, in 1723, he built a residential house called Grundhof near the source. 1723 is the most important date in the history of Jedlina-Zdroj as it is considered to be the date of the establishing of the spa. That year, an Austrian general Hans Christoph baron von Seher – Thoss – the owner of Jedlinka, bought a plot of land with a spring from Schäl. The source was soon well-casted. The first spa buildings and facilities began to be built. Particularly many investments were made in Jedlina-Zdroj by the wife of the general – Charlotte Maximilian Countess von Seher – Thoss. It is she who is considered to be the founder of the resort and it is from her name that the spring received the name Charlottenbrunn (until then it had been called Sauerborn or Tannhauser – Sauerbrunnen). Soon the entire settlement created at the source was named Charlottenbrunn (the name used for Jedlina-Zdroj until 1945). The first description of the mineral composition and healing properties of the source comes from 1726 and is the work of Georg Jahmann – a medic from Swidnica. The next water tests were carried out successively: in 1789 by a chemist Klaproth from Berlin and in 1825 by Carl Beinert – a pharmacist and a biologist from Jedlina-Zdroj.
In the 18th century Jedlina-Zdroj became not only a resort but also a centre of weaving and cloth making. In 1768 it received its town rights for the first time and it held them until 1919. Further development of the spa was temporarily interrupted by the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), the Napoleonic Wars (the Battle of Walim in 1807), as well as the floods in 1755 and the period of epidemics and famine in 1766 and 1767. The 19th century saw the dynamic development of the resort again. Then many new hotels and guest houses were erected and recreational areas of the spa were established. At the same time both old and new spa facilities were modernized. The originator and initiator of many projects in this area was the already mentioned Carl Beinert. Many investments that aimed at further modernization and expansion of the resort were undertaken in the years 1861-1864 by, then, the owner of Jedlina Zdroj – Carl Krister – the founder of the porcelain factory in Walbrzych. On his initiative, the Spa House was thoroughly rebuilt and expanded, a new walking hall and music pavilion were built on the promenade, the pavilion with the Charlotta spring was also rebuilt, and recreational areas were modernized. Unfortunately, Krister’s successors and subsequent owners of Jedlina-Zdroj no longer undertook any investment activities in the spa.
The period of stagnation ended in 1884, when Artur von Klitzing bought for his commune a heavily neglected resort of Jedlina-Zdroj from its previous owner. Thanks to the extensive organizational, modernization and investment activities undertaken by the commune authorities at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, Jedlina Zdroj not only quickly recovered from the fall but soon became one of the best known, most modern and most visited spas in the Silesia region. For example: in 1926, 1,650 patients and 2,000 tourists stayed in Jedlina-Zdroj. Numerous modern hotels and guesthouses were waiting for the visitors. Statistical data show that in 1937 the town had 4 hotels, 20 guesthouses and inns with guest rooms, as well as 38 tourist houses and a youth hostel. Patients and guests visiting the spa were offered many cultural and entertainment attractions. There were, among others, concerts of orchestras and choirs, dance tournaments and forest festivities. World War II and, a few years after its end, the disappearance of mineral springs caused by the activities of the Walbrzych coal mines are the main reasons for the subsequent collapse of the spa.
Between the years 1952 and 1961 climatic and landscape values of Jedlina Zdroj were used again and in 1962 the spa began to operate once more. Water for treatments was delivered from the spa in Szczawno Zdroj which operates as a part of one complex with Jedlina Zdroj. This is now ‘Health Resort Szczawno – Jedlina’ Ltd. Currently, intensive drilling works are underway to reach Jedlina’s own sources of mineral springs the occurrence of which had been confirmed by previous studies. In 1967, Jedlina-Zdroj was granted the town rights again. In 1970 the villages of Jedlinka, Suliszow, Kamiensk and Glinica were included within the town’s borders.
