Located at an altitude of over 1,420 meters above sea level, the most visible granite rock formation in the entire Karkonosze Mountains (it can be seen not only from many places on the hiking trails in the area of Karpacz and Śnieżka, but also from the Jelenia Góra Valley).

It was created – like other Karkonosze rocks – as a result of weathering granite, and the stones that form it are up to 12 meters high. Interestingly, the boulder facing north resembles a human figure, about which there are legends among the local people. Sometimes this place is referred to as the seat of the Mountain Spirit, the Karkonosz; another time, the Sunflower is sometimes called the Devil’s Stone – and its creation was allegedly related to the conflict between Liczyrzepa and the devil, who wanted to cover the nearby Great Pond, but turned into stone when surprised by the rising sun. The names in German (Mittagstein) and Czech (Polední kámen) come from the fact that, looking from the north (near Karpacz, Podgórzyn, Borowice and Przesieka), the sun rises above Słonecznik at noon. It is very easy to find here: The Main Sudetes Trail (red trail), and getting to the Sunflower from the Wang Temple, via Pilgrims (yellow trail), should take about two hours. Beautiful views – of the entire Jelenia Góra Valley, the rocks located below and Karpacz – guaranteed!
