When approaching Śnieżka mountain from the west, it is impossible not to notice the Dom Śląski hostel on flattened area below(Równia pod Śnieżką) – this characteristic building, clearly visible due to its yellow color, is for many the last stop before reaching the highest peak in the entire Sudetes
In its present shape, Dom Śląski has been in existence since 1922, although it is actually the third structure of the shelter. The first buildings were erected in 1847 as a competition for the Obří bouda (Riesenbaude) chalet opposite – then on the Czech side -, which was finally demolished in the early 1980s. In addition to the buffet and accommodation, Dom Śląski also offers various types of events (e.g. spending New Year’s Eve at Śnieżka). Currently, it is an object used only by tourists, although not long ago things were a bit different. After World War II, the hostel building was also home to the Border Protection Forces watchtower, and later – until 2005 – Border Guard officers.
