It uncovers the processes in which water is involved – from the functions performed in the human body to the ocean currents that shape the climate on Earth. Hydropolis is a place where multimedia technologies, interactive installations, faithful replicas and models as well as information-rich touch screens serve one purpose: showing water from different fascinating perspectives. In one of the 9 thematic zones you can, among others, watch a movie on a 360-degree panoramic screen, enter the legendary Trieste bathyscaphe – the first manned ship to reach the deepest place on our planet – or check for yourself how ancient water inventions operated.
Wroclaw Centre for Environmental Education has been operating only since December 5th 2015 but has already been visited by over half a million visitors! Dynamically developing its offer, it managed to earn the opinion of one of the most interesting science centres in Poland and was appreciated by independent expert groups – the Lower Silesian Key of Success for the best educational initiative and the title of Polish Wonder 2016 in the National Geographic plebiscite are just some of the titles won by Hydropolis in the first months of operation. In addition, Hydropolis has also gained two prestigious Ambassadors – Don Walsh and Ryszard Horowitz. The first one is an outstanding oceanographer and the first man to reach the deepest place on Earth, while Horowitz is a world-famous Polish photographer.
Workshop offer
Education is one of the most important activities in Hydropolis. The centre offers a wide range of activities adapted to the age of the students. The workshops address selected issues of the current core curriculum. One of Hydropolis’s collaborators is Joanna Urbanska, the Teacher of the Year 2016 in Poland. She is the author of one of the didactic scenarios created solely for the needs of the centre.
The full educational offer includes 9 workshop classes (from pre-school groups to upper secondary schools), 3 thematic sightseeing paths (historical, ecological and geographical) and 2 types of design classes. In addition, the offer includes the possibility of a guided tour of our exhibition.
A monument that gained new life
Hydropolis is also a unique example of the revitalization of a post-industrial facility. The exhibition devoted to water is located in the historical underground clean water tank – the facility was built in 1893 and is one of the monuments of Wroclaw water supply architecture. The interior of the tank consisted of four chambers which, for the purposes of the exhibition, were combined to form passages. An important element of Hydropolis is the entrance zone to the exhibition area added to the south. Its copper façade harmonizes with the historical brick block of the original building.
