ME, OLGA HEPNAROVÁ

ME, OLGA HEPNAROVÁ (Czech: Já, Olga Hepnarová) is a Czech-Polish-Slovak biographical drama from 2016, directed by Tomáš Weinreb and Petr Kazda.

The film tells the true story of Olga Hepnarová — a young woman who, on July 10, 1973, drove a truck into a crowd of people on a street in Prague, killing eight. She became the last woman to be executed in Czechoslovakia. The film reconstructs her life: one marked by loneliness, alienation, rejection, and psychological abuse. Olga struggles with a lack of acceptance from her family, peers, and society, and her sense of grievance intensifies over the years. Presented in a minimalist, black-and-white aesthetic, the film portrays her gradual radicalization — a woman unable to find her place in any of the social roles imposed on her: as a daughter, employee, or partner. Rather than seeking cheap sensationalism, the film offers a deep psychological portrait of a person pushed to society’s margins, who ultimately chooses to cross the line — deliberately, and with full awareness. The character is not shown as a monster, but as both a victim and a product of the system.
