The Oder Valley – the largest of Lower Silesia’s tourist regions – is also the heart of the entire region. The Oder Valley is home to many cities such as Glogow, Legnica, Olawa, Polkowice, as well as the province’s capital, Wroclaw, which, however, is itself a separate tourist region.
Neither history buffs looking for an experience primarily related to exploring cultural monuments, nor – and even more so – those tourists who attach more importance to the region’s heritage and natural wealth will be bored in this vast, low-lying area, stretching from Olawa in the southeastern corner of the province to the vicinity of Glogow to the northwest of the Lower Silesian capital.
First – on the list of places worth visiting should necessarily include Lubiaz, whose pearl is the baroque Cistercian abbey, the largest building of its kind in the world, the aforementioned Glogow – if only for the historic Castle of the Glogow Princes and the classicist Town Hall, as well as Olawa and Brzeg Dolny – especially for their palaces, located near the Oder River and delightful in architecture, today serving as either public administration buildings or cultural centers. History enthusiasts can’t miss the sights of Legnica, which, decidedly underrated, boasts the Knights’ Academy, the mighty Piast Castle and wonderful Gothic temples.
The others – using the region’s numerous water, bicycle and horseback riding trails – have a unique opportunity to look at the nature of the Oder Valley region. And there is much to admire, because among Odra’s oxbow lakes, marshes and riparian forests in the area of the planned Odra Valley Landscape Park alone there are more than 1,000 species of plants, almost 200 species of birds, of which about 150 spend the breeding season here, and almost 300 species of vertebrates. Thus, it is possible to encounter, among others, white-tailed eagles, black storks, kingfishers and cranes, but also to come across specimens of the rare Swallow’s bark beetle, wild-growing lily of the valley, or other protected plants – common fern, Pomeranian honeysuckle and lily of the valley.
The Oder Valley is a picturesque region that includes many interesting cities and towns. Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, lies on the Oder River and impresses with its beautiful bridges, cathedrals and charming islands. Opole, known for its annual song festival, also has many historic sites and cozy corners. Brzeg is a small town with the impressive castle of the Dukes of Brzeg, and Kędzierzyn-Koźle, although industrial, offers interesting sites related to the history of water transportation. Glogow, with its medieval defensive walls, and Scinawa, with its traditional atmosphere, are excellent spots to explore along the Oder River. The region, full of beautiful landscapes and historical sites, is an ideal place for lovers of nature, history and active recreation.
