Odra Valley (Dolina Odry)

The Oder Valley — the largest of Lower Silesia’s tourist regions — is also the heart of the entire region. The Oder Valley is home to many cities such as Głogów, Legnica, Oława, Polkowice, as well as the province’s capital, Wrocław, which, however, is itself a separate tourist region.

Description

Neither history buffs looking for an experience primarily related to exploring cultural monuments, nor – and even more so – those tourists who attach more importance to the region’s heritage and natural wealth will be bored in this vast, low-lying area, stretching from Olawa in the southeastern corner of the province to the vicinity of Glogow to the northwest of the Lower Silesian capital.

First and foremost—on the list of must-see places—you should definitely include Lubiąż, whose crown jewel is the Baroque Cistercian abbey, the largest building of its kind in the world, as well as the previously mentioned Głogów —if only for the historic Castle of the Dukes of Głogów and the Neoclassical Town Hall—as well as Oława and Brzeg Dolny—especially because of their palaces, situated near the Oder (Odra) River and featuring stunning architecture, which today serve either as public administration buildings or cultural centers. History buffs cannot miss the historic sites of Legnica, a city that is definitely underrated but boasts the Knights’ Academy, the imposing Piast Castle, and magnificent Gothic churches.

Those who enjoy the region’s numerous water, bicycle, and horseback riding trails have a unique opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the Oder Valley. And there’s much to admire, as the Oder River’s oxbow lakes, marshes, and riparian forests, in the Oder River Meadows Land (Kraina Łęgów Odrzańskich) alone, are home to over 1,000 plant species, nearly 200 bird species (including about 150 breeding species), and nearly 300 vertebrate species. Here, you can encounter white-tailed eagles, black storks, kingfishers, and cranes, among others, as well as the rare Elbe helleborine, wild lilies of the valley, and other protected plants, such as the common fern, Pomeranian honeysuckle, and Turk’s cap lily.
