The voivodeship’s capital is perhaps most closely associated with Lower Silesia. It boasts many unique sites—the Old Town Square, Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island), the Leopoldina Aula, the Racławice Panorama, and the nationally renowned Wrocław Zoo.
The capital of Lower Silesia is situated on the Oder River, in the heart of the Silesian Lowlands. Wrocław’s jewel is undoubtedly its Market Square – one of the largest in Europe, with its Town Hall considered one of Poland’s most important monuments of Gothic bourgeois architecture.
This city combines rich history with modernity, offering both Gothic monuments like the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Ostrów Tumski and unique attractions like the Afrykarium at the Wrocław Zoo. The Market Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, is surrounded by colorful tenement houses, and the mid-market block houses, among other buildings, the Old Town Hall, a branch of the Wrocław City Museum and open to tourists.
Wrocław is also the cultural center of Lower Silesia, full of museums, theaters, and regular events such as the Christmas Market, the St. John’s Fair, and the annual attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the simultaneous performance of “Hey Joe” during the Thanks Jimi Festival, and the Vertigo Summer Jazz Festival—a summer celebration of jazz that brings Lower Silesia to life by moving concerts to the region’s outdoor and atmospheric venues, creating an unforgettable musical atmosphere. Also worth noting is the Centennial Hall(Hala Stulecia), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the pergola and Japanese garden in its vicinity. Wrocław is also a city of gnomes scattered throughout its streets. You can find cycling routes in the provincial capital here.
