The two floors of the historic Great Stables house the nature exhibition “Klimatyczne Karkonosze”, a tour of which lasts about 1-1.5 hours, and on the first floor of the Palace the educational exhibition of a historical nature “Sobieszów Palace”, a tour of which lasts about an hour. Its complement is the educational path “Become a Steward”, which should appeal especially to younger visitors. Both expositions are available in Polish, German, English and Czech. For guests with special needs, we have prepared an audiodescription and a tour in Polish Sign Language (PJM).

“Climatic Karkonosze” is an exhibition that does not imitate nature – you still have to go to the mountains to meet it. The exhibition builds moods accompanying communion with nature – we see light shining through the crowns of trees, feel the vibrations accompanying the formation of mountains, and are surrounded by darkness and uncertainty when night falls in the forest. The exhibition is designed for an unhurried tour, which encourages reflection, reverie and the search for answers to our questions. Using the senses by experiencing various textures, sounds and even smells builds memory and knowledge of the Giant Mountains. In such a composed space there is also room for a number of activities based on experiments – in the room “Through all the floors of Karkonosze” we will check how rapid the current of a mountain stream is, in the room “Forest Night Dream” we will find out where animals hide at night, and in the room “Laboratory” we will take a close look at how a butterfly wing is built. Through the exhibition we are led by a single drop of water, which is released from the “cloud” by the visitor. A mountain stream leads it down the Krkonoše slopes, until finally the drop reaches the place where it “evaporates” and returns to the cloud, thus closing the symbolic cycle of water in nature.

History of the creation of the Center

Almost 10 years ago, the former estate of the Schaffgotschs’ ordination in Sobieszow became the property of the Karkonoski National Park – during this time the Park has struggled with many difficulties due to the inability to obtain external funding, construction stoppages, rising prices of construction materials and services, and complicated settlements in projects. Despite these obstacles, we have managed to get to the point where we can invite the first guests to the Center.

Already at the level of planning the overall investment, the construction of the Center was divided into three stages. The first included conceptual work and the preparation and implementation of construction and execution projects for the external networks and parts of the buildings. At that time, not only the reconstruction of the Palace and the Gardener’s House was designed, but also the development around the Palace and the erection of a new structure, the so-called Electric Barn. Phase II included the renovation and reconstruction of the Great and Small Stables, the construction from scratch of the Entrance Building and a parking lot on the side of the bus terminus on Cieplicka Street. This stage of work also included comprehensive construction of two permanent exhibitions – “Klimatyczne Karkonosze” and “Pałac Sobieszów”.

We still need time to fully complete the construction of the Education and Nature Center. KPN employees face tasks for the implementation of the third stage of the investment, including obtaining external funds for the renovation and reconstruction of the former Bursa building, standing just off Karkonoska Street, which was originally the house of the Shaffgotsch estate manager. According to the projects, the Bursa will serve as a hotel and educational facility – with accommodation for 60 people and two educational studios on the first floor: a culinary studio and an art studio. As soon as financial programs from the new EU perspective 2021-27 are launched, KPN will look for opportunities to raise money for the implementation of this investment. This will not be an easy task – each time you have to fit in with the priorities of a given program with your project, and the national park cannot always be a beneficiary in every project.

In rebuilding the Bursa, the NPS wants to restore its original form: restoring the large entrance gate in the building, which opened a view of the Palace. Park staff will also try to raise money to complete the renovation of the Granary, a building adjacent to the Electric Barn. The Park’s own funds managed to renovate the building’s roof in late 2019, and renovation of the facade and door and window frames is currently underway. Ultimately, the Granary is to be rented to local artists and manufacturers, who will be able to offer their goods there.
