The building was built in the 13th century as a defensive castle. Initially, it served as the seat of the Silesian Piast dynasty, and from 1764 – for almost two centuries – it housed a prison. After repeated destruction and reconstruction, little remained of the building’s original form. Currently, the southwestern wing of the castle is open to visitors, along with an observation tower, which offers panoramic views of the city and the Kaczawskie Foothills from a height of 25 meters.
