Uranium Mine in Kletno

The history of mining in Kletno is associated with the beginning of settlement in the region – miners, extracting iron ore from the mountains, appeared near the Śnieżnik Massif, most probably at the beginning of the 14th century.

In later periods, from the Middle Ages to the mid-twentieth century, more than 20 tunnels were used by miners working in it to exploit the local deposits, e.g. silver and copper. The situation changed in 1948 with the start of the Soviet-financed and supervised exploration of uranium ore in the Polish Sudetes – one of the places where preliminary research obtained promising results was the tunnels in Kletno. During the five years of operation of the mine, closed in 1953, about 20 tons of uranium were extracted there, later exported to the Soviet Union. In the Old Uranium Mine in Kletno, a section of the tunnel corridor No. 18 with a total length of approx. 400 meters is available for tourists. local minerals (fluorites, amethysts and quartzes). Walking through a fragment of the old pavement is not the only attraction worth visiting when visiting the mine. The former mining spaces have now been transformed into an unconventional tourist and educational institution, which also offers extremely interesting lessons in the field of mineralogy, geology, history and ecology.
