Grodno Castle

In its history the real history mixes with legends so much that it is often difficult to separate one from the other.

At the top of the Choina hill, as if guarding the border between the Sowie and Walbrzyskie Mountains, rises the beautifully situated Grodno Castle. Its first owner was probably Bolko I, although there is no hard evidence for it. The fact is that, like other nearby castles, from the hands of the Piast dynasty it fell into the hands of the Czech Crown. When the knights’ families took the castle over, the gloomy fame of the robbers’ castle grew around it and stayed for over a hundred years. The further history of Grodno Castle was no less turbulent. The facility passed from hand to hand, was expanded, destroyed, burnt. Over time it lost its strategic importance. In the end, it fell into decline so that the local peasants decided to buy it to obtain building material for sale after demolition. Grodno Castle owes its rescue to Professor Jan Gustaw Büschnig from Wrocław. After 1824, the castle was protected against further destruction, and subsequent generations have given it a tourist character.
