Książ Castle

A mosaic full of secrets

Only the safe location above the gorge and in the bend of Pelcznica river seems to remind you that it was once a Piast fortified castle. Suffice it to say that the fortifications surrounding the fortress in the 17th century were rebuilt into garden terraces, and the remaining fortifications and the castle itself, both from the outside and inside, bear traces of probably all architectural styles that existed between the 13th and 20th century. The castle and its underground are, however, not the only attractions of Ksiaz.

Walkers will find magnificent gardens and a park, grand stables and a palm house, as well as kilometres of marked themed trails. Within the Ksiaz National Park you can wander to the arboretum – Sudeten Dendrological Garden or to the Przelomy-under-Ksiaz nature reserve. Apart from the above, a climb south along the Ksiaz Gorge is a chance to find a second, somewhat forgotten castle with an extremely interesting and romantic history.

More information, including a wide offer and practical information on visiting Ksiaz Castle, can be found at www.ksiaz.walbrzych.pl/turystyka.

We also recommend visiting Ksiaz Castle at night. It is a dark adventure lasting about 90 minutes. A group of daredevils armed only with lamp lights, along with a guide, travels through the both well-known chambers of the Castle, such as Strachy (Fears) or Skalka Szczescia (Lucky Rock), as well as rooms inaccessible in daylight, i.e. the kitchen on the fifth floor or the Hochberg cellars on level -2 and all this bathed in darkness.
