A Beaky Fortress
The turbulent history of Bolkow Castle began at the end of the 13th century. For over a hundred years it remained in the hands of the subsequent Piast princes, acting as a very important treasury. Then the castle changed owners every few dozen years. At that time, it was besieged many times and underwent reconstruction to adapt it to the changing functions. A characteristic twenty-five-meter castle tower, towering over the surrounding area, has survived to our times. It was built on a circular plan but in the south-west side it was given the shape of a wedge (so-called beak). It was to protect the building against artillery fire causing the cannonballs to slide and at the same time strengthening the walls. In addition, there was a deep hunger dungeon in the tower where the convicts were thrown in. Left to their fate, they usually survived for about a week. Those endowed with a special will to survive, licked water off the walls significantly prolonging their suffering.
Despite the fact that the building was abandoned for almost two centuries and it visibly deteriorated, today it is a considerable tourist attraction. This is mainly due to the enthusiasts of the knightly heritage of the castle. Festivals and tournaments are held here and all year round you can admire the museum exhibition and enjoy the magnificent view of the surrounding area. Bolkow Castle also found its place in literature, music and film.
